Job summary

UAB Medicine is seeking a patient care assistant to support basic clinical and non-clinical activities under supervision in a hospital setting.

Responsibilities include assisting with ambulation, ADLs, reporting changes to nursing staff, maintaining clean rooms, performing select technical tasks under supervision, and accurately recording vitals and input/output. BLS certification required within 30 days of hire.

Qualifications

• BLS certification must be obtained within 30 days of hire.
• High school diploma or equivalent, or 1 year of relevant experience.
• Ability to perform basic clinical and non-clinical patient care under supervision.

Responsibilities

• Assist patients with ambulation and activities of daily living.
• Tend to personal care and daily living activities for patients.
• Report changes in physical, mental, or emotional condition to nursing staff; document records.
• Keep patient rooms clean and maintain medical equipment.
• Perform technical tasks as directed (oxygen setup, Foley care, pulse oximetry, specimen collection, EKGs).
• Obtain and record vitals, weight, and inputs/outputs.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Description

Perform basic clinical and non-clinical patient care activities under supervision.

• Assist patients with ambulation as necessary. This may include helping them to a recliner in their
  room, walk to the bathroom or down the hall. Assist dismissed patients in getting safely to their
  vehicles.
• Assist patients with tending to personal care and activities of daily living.
• Reports findings or changes in physical, mental and emotional conditions to nursing staff.
  Documents necessary records.
• Keeps patient rooms clean, orderly, and maintains medical equipment.
• Performs certain technical patient care duties in the hospital as directed by the staff nurse such as
  oxygen setup, foley catheter care, pulse oximetry setup, specimen collection and EKGs.
• Obtain and record vitals, weight, and inputs and outputs.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Licensure / Certification / Registration:

• BLS Provider obtained within 1 Month (30 days) of hire date or job transfer date required. American Heart Association or American Red Cross accepted.

Education:

• High School diploma equivalency OR 1 year of applicable cumulative job specific experience required.
