Payroll Senior Associate (Japanese / English Bilingual)
A Japanese CPA firm is seeking a Payroll Senior Associate with experience in client-facing payroll operations and individual income tax services. This role supports payroll and tax processing for multinational clients, especially expatriates, and requires a detail-oriented professional with strong communication skills and knowledge of U.S. tax and payroll compliance. The work environment is flexible and hybrid, based in Torrance, CA.
Process and review semi-monthly and monthly payrolls for multiple clients using payroll software (e.g., ADP, Paychex)
Prepare and assist in filing individual income tax returns (Form 1040) for expatriates and inbound assignees
Conduct gross-up and tax equalization calculations for international employees
Review and reconcile payroll reports and wage withholding for accuracy and compliance with U.S. federal, state, and local laws
Maintain employee and payroll data securely and accurately
Respond to payroll and tax-related inquiries from clients and government agencies
Communicate professionally with clients regarding payroll processing schedules, changes, and compliance matters
Support the Payroll Manager and collaborate with internal teams on tax engagements and reporting
Stay up to date with payroll and tax regulation changes and best practices
Assist in training and reviewing junior staff’s work as needed
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
3–5 years of experience in payroll processing and/or individual income tax (public accounting or payroll service firm preferred)
Working knowledge of U.S. payroll tax regulations and Form 1040
Strong attention to detail, organizational, and time management skills
Excellent communication skills in English (Japanese bilingual preferred)
Proficiency in Excel and experience with payroll software (ADP, Paychex, Gusto, etc.)
CPA or EA preferred, or progress toward certification is a plus
Authorized to work in the U.S.
Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM (Flexibility may be considered)
Torrance, CA
Hybrid or remote (preferred to come to the office once a week)
$65,000 – $75,000 annually (based on experience and qualifications)
