Job summary

Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is seeking an Accountant 1 in the Bureau of Commonwealth Payroll Operations to perform professional payroll accounting functions and manage employee debts to the Commonwealth from salary and travel advancements.

The role requires sharp analytical skills, independent decision making, attention to detail, and strong communication. Knowledge of SAP and HR/Payroll systems is essential, with opportunities for telework and AWS after probation.

Qualifications

• Five years of bookkeeping experience and fifteen accounting credits.
• One year as a Financial Programs Trainee or equivalent Federal Government job title.
• Successful completion of the Commonwealth Accounting Intern Program or equivalent.
• One year as a Fiscal Technician with fifteen accounting credits.
• Bachelor's Degree including or supplemented by fifteen credits in accounting.
• Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements within three months of graduating.

Responsibilities

• Receivables Processing: Review and audit salary claims/receivables, post and verify data, and make corrections.
• Overpayment Collection: Coordinate collection of monies owed by employees; record checks and remittances.
• Account Maintenance: Ensure advance checks issued correctly; complete monthly bank reconciliation; resolve deposit issues.
• Detail Analysis: Review incoming checks, requests and inquiries to ensure proper procedures.
• Communication: Prepare, review and send correspondence to employees and agency partners; provide guidance.
• Agency Coordination: Work with internal sections, HR offices, banks, and partners to support smooth finances.
