Job summary

The City of Somerville in Massachusetts is seeking a Payroll Manager to oversee payroll operations and ensure accurate, timely, and compliant processing for all city employees. You will serve as the subject matter expert on payroll systems and related financial reporting.

The role requires strong Excel skills, knowledge of payroll tax rules, and experience with governmental payroll in Massachusetts. You will guide staff, coordinate with HR, Finance, and the outside provider, and maintain

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree and 3–5 years’ payroll experience or equivalent.
• Governmental payroll experience preferred; APA certified preferred.
• Proficient in Excel, Word, Outlook and Internet.
• Knowledge of Harpers Millennium 3 Payroll for Windows.
• Knowledge of W-2s, external audits, and payroll taxes.

Responsibilities

• Oversee weekly, biweekly, monthly and special payrolls with accuracy.
• Audit pre-payroll reports and resolve discrepancies before submission.
• Maintain and audit payroll records and employee compensation data.
• Collaborate with HR, Finance, Treasury, and outside payroll provider.
• Prepare payroll reports and reconcile payroll-related ledgers.
• Ensure compliance with laws, collective bargaining agreements and internal controls.
