Position Overview
The Payroll Manager will serve as the organization's payroll subject matter expert and lead all aspects of payroll operations in a dynamic, multi-state environment. This highly visible, hands-on role is responsible for payroll processing, regulatory compliance, audits, reporting, system integrity, team leadership, and continuous improvement.
The ideal candidate will have strong multi-state payroll expertise and proven experience leading a payroll system migration or integration for an employee population of at least 500 employees. This individual will partner closely with Human Resources, Finance, Benefits, IT, and business leaders to maintain accurate, compliant, and efficient payroll operations while delivering an exceptional employee experience,
- Lead and oversee weekly, biweekly, and off-cycle payroll processing, ensuring employees are paid accurately and on time.
- Manage payroll team members and third-party service providers while promoting accountability, operational excellence, and continuous improvement.
- Lead payroll system migrations and integrations, including implementation planning, data validation, testing, issue resolution, and post-launch support.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll laws, wage-and-hour regulations, tax requirements, and applicable employment regulations.
- Serve as the organization's payroll subject matter expert, resolving complex payroll, tax, compliance, and system-related issues.
- Partner with Human Resources, Finance, Benefits, IT, and business leaders to support efficient payroll operations.
- Oversee payroll audits, reporting, account reconciliations, system controls, and payroll data integrity.
- Review payroll calculations, including regular earnings, bonuses, commissions, paid time off, deductions, and leave payments.
- Manage payroll-related vendor relationships and secure data integrations involving benefits, retirement plans, timekeeping, and other systems.
- Maintain accurate payroll records and provide timely reporting, analysis, and support to internal and external stakeholders.
- Identify and implement process improvements that increase payroll accuracy, efficiency, compliance, and scalability.
Required Qualifications
- Five or more years of progressive payroll experience within a mid-sized corporate environment.
- Hands-on experience managing multi-state payroll operations.
- Proven experience leading or playing a significant role in a payroll platform migration or integration involving at least 500 employees.
- Comprehensive knowledge of payroll regulations, wage-and-hour laws, payroll taxes, and employee benefit programs.
- Experience managing payroll staff, vendors, projects, and competing priorities.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office applications.
- Strong analytical, organizational, problem-solving, project management, and communication skills.
- Ability to handle confidential information with professionalism, accuracy, and discretion.
- Demonstrated success improving payroll processes, controls, and operational efficiency.
- Ability to work 100% onsite, Monday through Friday, in Marlborough, Massachusetts.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with payroll system implementation, testing, data conversion, integration, and post-implementation stabilization.
- Experience supporting payroll for 500 or more employees.
- Payroll-related professional certification, such as Certified Payroll Professional (CPP).
