Job summary

Ascend Charter Schools in Brooklyn, NY, seeks a Director of Payroll to lead the payroll team, ensuring accurate semi-monthly payroll processing and seamless interfacing with HR and payroll systems to meet business needs.

The role reports to the Controller, requires hybrid work with in-office presence at least three days per week, and offers a comprehensive benefits package and a starting salary of $95,000.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 6 years of experience in payroll, HRIS, or related HR/finance operations roles.
• Strong experience with HRIS or data management systems.
• Proficient in Excel and financial data analysis.
• Attention to detail with zero tolerance for payroll inaccuracies.
• Strong organizational, project management, and time-management skills.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

• Direct and supervise Payroll team to ensure seamless payroll administration, including compliance and tax-related filings and reporting.
• Lead HRIS-driven process improvements for efficiency.
• Collaborate with Finance, HR, and Talent on processes and staffing models.
• Ensure payroll systems comply with laws, regulations, policies, and procedures; advise and resolve issues.
• Review and approve the payroll system enhancement agenda.
• Serve as the primary payroll resource for school personnel; resolve discrepancies and respond to inquiries.
• Oversee retirement plan design and contributions in coordination with plan stakeholders.
