Job summary

The Washington State Patrol in Olympia, WA is seeking a Payroll/Benefits Specialist within Budget and Fiscal Services. This role supports payroll, coordinates employee benefits, and ensures accurate payroll execution.

You will perform HRMS PAY1 end-user activities, provide guidance to staff, review payroll documents, analyze results, and help interpret labor, payroll, and leave data while ensuring compliance with FLSA, IRS, CBAs and agency policies.

Qualifications

• Must have a High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
• Ability to apply practical accounting principles.
• Ability to process large quantities of fiscal data accurately and with attention to detail.
• Ability to communicate effectively with customers and co-workers while working cohesively in a team environment.
• Knowledge of basic math and keyboarding skills.
• Knowledge of or ability to quickly pick up state laws, CBAs, and agency policies related to payroll, leave and benefits.
• Must be dependable, discrete, and able to maintain confidential information.
• Must be able to organize personal workspace to minimize unsafe incidents.

Responsibilities

• Perform payroll functions and coordinate benefits for agency employees.
• Provide guidance to agency employees.
• Review and approve payroll documents and forms.
• Analyze payroll results and reports.
• Assist in the review, analysis and interpretation of labor, payroll and leave data.
• Initiate actions to ensure compliance with department policies and procedures, FLSA, Civil Service Rules, IRS, DRS, HCA, CBAs, etc.
