Job summary

Brown University Health is seeking an Access and Referral Specialist to manage incoming referrals, ensure accuracy, and coordinate scheduling per clinic guidelines. You will communicate with referring providers and patients about insurance issues and ensure timely processing in the EHR.

The role focuses on maintaining quality control of referrals, supporting staff in documentation, and providing exceptional customer service in a busy ambulatory setting.

Qualifications

• Associate degree in health information technology or related field (or equivalent ambulatory experience).
• Two years of clinical referral experience required and/or experience in coding/billing and medical record operations in an ambulatory setting.
• Spanish speaking strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

• Receives and reviews all incoming referrals for completeness and accuracy.
• Communicates with referring providers/patients regarding insurance coverage issues.
• Performs triage on referrals and escalates as needed to management.
• Enter referral details into the EHR and maintain referral documentation.
• Schedule referral appointments per protocol and obtain necessary authorizations.
• Serve as liaison to patients, providers, and practice staff with excellent customer service.
