Job summary

Ortho Rhode Island is seeking a Patient Navigator to join our team, serving as an elevated Medical Assistant and care coordinator. You will support physicians with patient care tasks while managing scheduling, documentation, and referrals.

The role requires excellent organization, communication skills, and proficiency with EMR systems, HIPAA and OSHA guidelines, as you help patients access care and navigate our orthopedic services.

Qualifications

  • Clinical experience as Medical Assistant or equivalent
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to work in a hybrid clinical/administrative role

Responsibilities

  • Drive clinic processes with the physician and team
  • Room patients, obtain vitals, document histories, and prepare for exams
  • Assist providers with clinical procedures and exams
  • Provide patient education regarding care instructions and follow-up
  • Maintain cleanliness, stock supplies, and prepare exam rooms
  • Follow HIPAA/OSHA protocols
  • Proficient in EMR software
  • Lead clinic operations as part of the physician's team
  • Greet patients, answer messages, respond to inquiries
  • Schedule appointments, coordinate referrals, and follow-up
  • Obtain insurance authorizations and verify coverage
  • Manage patient records and documentation in EMR
  • Support care coordination and communication with providers
  • Track patient progress and navigate external resources
  • Manage FMLA/DOL paperwork and RX inquiries
  • Perform other duties as assigned

What you'll do:

The Patient Navigator serves as an elevated Medical Assistant to the physician and of their care team by providing both clinical and administrative support to ensure seamless patient experiences. This role functions as a hybrid between a Medical Assistant and a Medical Administrator - supporting providers with direct patient care tasks while also managing scheduling, documentation, and coordination of services. The Patient Navigator is an individual with excellent organizational, administrative and communication skills. The Patient Navigator helps patients access the care they need, guides them through the healthcare system, and ensures efficient clinic operations.

Responsibilities/ Duties:

Clinical Support (Medical Assistant Functions):

  • Drive the clinic process with the Physician for them and their team
  • Room patients, obtain vital signs, document medical histories, and prepare patients for examinations.
  • Assist providers with clinical procedures and exams as needed.
  • Provide patient education regarding care instructions and follow-up
  • Maintain cleanliness, stock supplies, and ensure exam rooms are ready for use.
  • Follow infection control and safety protocols under HIPAA and OSHA regulations.
  • Proficient in EMR Software

Administrative Support (Medical Administrator Functions):

  • Leader of the Physician's team to oversee the clinic operations
  • Greet patients, answer messages, and respond to inquiries with professionalism and compassion.
  • Schedule appointments, coordinate referrals, and manage follow-up communications.
  • Obtain insurance authorizations and verify coverage when necessary.
  • Manage patient records, update EMRs, and ensure accurate documentation.
  • Support providers with correspondence, test results, and care coordination.
  • Track patient progress and assist with navigation of external resources or specialty services.
  • Manage patient work related FMLA and DOL paperwork
  • Manage RX inquiries/requests
  • Other duties as may be assigned as necessary
