Job summary

Northwestern Medicine is seeking a Financial Counselor to support patient accounts and provide exceptional service. The role reflects NM’s mission and adheres to ethics and compliance standards, coordinating with multiple departments to resolve billing and payment concerns.

Responsibilities include responding to inquiries, guiding patients through financial options, collecting deposits for self-pay services, and documenting all interactions in the Billing System.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• 2-3 years customer service or medical office experience.
• Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
• Proficiency in computer data-entry/typing.
• Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
• Ability to type 40 wpm.
• Ability to multi-task.
• Customer service oriented.
• Excellent organizational, time management, analytical, and problem solving skills.

Responsibilities

• Responds to questions and concerns.
• Maintains patient confidentiality per HIPAA regulations.
• Provides exceptional customer service to consumers.
• Identifies and counsels financially unsecured patients regarding payment options or financial assistance programs.
• Requests and collects patient deposits for self-pay patients.
• Documents all patient interactions in Billing System.
• Adheres to financial counseling and collection guidelines as established by Northwestern Memorial HealthCare.
• May conduct in-person interviews of patients receiving care while the patient is on-site.
• Communicates with management and staff on activities and action items.
• Works with other departments to expedite resolution of patient accounts.
