Job summary

Sentara Norfolk General Hospital is seeking a Patient Care Technician (PCT) for the Burn Trauma unit. This full-time day shift position runs 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM with rotating weekends on three 12-hour shifts.

The role includes patient care, vital signs, mobility support, phlebotomy, EKG testing, specimen collection, and Foley catheter management under RN supervision, with emphasis on safety and timely reporting of changes.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or Equivalent required with one of the listed certifications or program completion.
• Certificates or active enrollment in CNA, NCMA, NCPCT, EMR/EMS/EMT/AEMT or Paramedic track are acceptable.
• Currently in a clinical program or recently worked as a PCT/Nursing Assistant within 3 years.

Responsibilities

• Provide patient care and assist with activities of daily living as directed by RN.
• Take and document vital signs, assist with mobility and ambulation.
• Perform phlebotomy, point-of-care testing and EKGs as needed.
• Assist with IV removal, specimen collection and Foley catheter handling.
• Observe patient status, report changes promptly and maintain safety protocols.

Job description

Sentara Norfolk General Hospital is hiring a Patient Care Technician (PCT) for the Burn Trauma unit. This is a Full-Time, Day Shift (12-hour shift) position.

Hours: 7:00AM to 7:00PM - Three 12-hour shifts (36 hours/week), with rotating weekends.

Department Overview:

Burn Trauma is a 34-bed mixed Intermediate care and medical/surgical unit. There are 17 beds forstepdown/intermediatelevel of care. The patient population is neurosurgery, trauma, burns and orthopedic trauma. The intermediate care patients are received from both the Burn/Trauma ICU and the Neurosurgical ICU.There are also 17 beds for medical/surgical level of care for neurosurgical, trauma, burns, orthopedic trauma, and bariatric weight loss (gastric bypass and gastric sleeves).

The Patient Care Technician provides patient care, supports independent and dependent activities of daily living, vital signs, mobility and ambulation, phlebotomy, point of care testing, EKG testing, peripheral IV removal, specimen collection, and foley catheter insertion and removal, and complies with patient safety practices under the direction of the professional RN nurse. Observes patients' physical, mental, and emotional conditions and documents in a timely and accurate manner while reporting any change to the nurse or medical staff.

Requirements:

Education:

• High School Diploma or Equivalent (Required) and one of the following is required:
• Sentara Care Partner Certification Program, or
• Successful completion of the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), or
• National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA), or
• National Patient Care Technician (NCPCT), or
• Completion of US Navy Hospital Corps School, or
• Emergency Services to include EMR, EMS, EMT, AEMT and Paramedic, or
• Current student enrolled in a clinical program (beyond prerequisites) having completed at least one semester of a Registered Nurse (RN), Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), Respiratory Therapist (RT) or Physical Therapist (PT) program, or
• Current work experience within the last three years as a Patient Care Technician (PCT) or Nursing Assistant.

Certifications/Licensure:

• AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 90 days of hire.

Experience:

• One year of health care experience (Preferred).
