Job description

Purpose and Scope:

Functions as part of the dialysis healthcare team to provide safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the supervision of a licensed nurse, in accordance with organizational policies, procedures, and regulations. Responsible for setting up and operating hemodialysis machines, maintaining a safe environment, and supporting quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient satisfaction and care outcomes.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
Patient-Related
  • Assist in providing patient education on adequacy measures, disease process, and access management.
  • Welcome patients, evaluate vascular access, perform cannulation, and administer heparin as delegated.
  • Record vital signs, weight, and treatment data accurately and timely.
  • Monitor patient response, manage intradialytic issues, and document all interventions and observations.
  • Prepare patients for discharge, including post-treatment evaluation and documentation.
  • Ensure safety alarms are active, and conduct safety checks on equipment.
  • Assist with laboratory specimen collection and ensure infection control protocols are followed.
Staff and Communication
  • Support staff training and maintain a safe, clean environment.
  • Follow all organizational policies and ethical practices.
Record Keeping
  • Participate in CQI activities, document treatment data, and ensure completeness of treatment sheets and lab requisitions.
Infection Control
  • Support infection control practices and participate in audits and education.
Transitional Care Unit
  • Support new patients during their first 4 weeks of dialysis, including education and coordination of care.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
  • Perform physical tasks including lifting, moving, and assisting patients, with accommodations as needed.
  • Work environment includes healthcare facility conditions with exposure to infectious materials.
  • Requires travel between facilities and participation in meetings.
Education and Licenses:
  • High school diploma or G.E.D. required.
  • Must meet state and/or national certification requirements.
  • Maintain licensure and training as required.
Experience and Skills:
  • Previous patient care experience preferred.
  • Successful completion of dialysis training and CPR certification required.

Addendum: Home Therapies Program (Not Home Assist)

Responsibilities include assisting with home visit tasks, patient education, scheduling, specimen collection, and supply management, under supervision and in compliance with state laws.

Supports inventory management for the home program and patient supplies, and provides home support within legal and regulatory boundaries.
