UPMC is hiring a Part Time Patient Care Tech for our Emergency Department. This position is on days/evening shift with hours from 7a-7p, 7a-3p or 3p-11p. The schedule also includes every other weekend and holidays.

Purpose:

The Patient Care Technician - Specialist provides routine patient care and supports the department services in accordance with established policies and procedures, and as may be directed by the nurse or physician to assure that the highest degree of quality patient care can be maintained at all times. Completes Specialist patient care duties after successfully completing training and annual competencies. Must routinely perform the UPMC nursing core patient care technician responsibilities including ADLs (bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, ambulating, turning and repositioning patients), point of care testing (blood glucose), weights, vital signs, I&O, telemetry monitor application/reapplication, HAC & PSI prevention (TEDs/SCDs). In addition, completes simple dressings, placement and removal of restraints, bladder scan, all specimen collections. Additionally, must perform IV catheter removal, Foley catheter removal, IV insertion, Foley catheter insertion, straight catheterization, phlebotomy, and ticket to ride. All competencies must be achieved. The Patient Care Technician - Specialist will also perform at least one or more of the following advanced skills based on department need: basic arrhythmia, complex wound care, 12 lead EKG, and NG tubes clamping and removal.

Responsibilities:
  • Communicate effectively with all members of the healthcare team, demonstrating understanding of cultural diversity, workplace safety, and professionalism. Develop and maintain productive relationships, demonstrating accountability, enthusiasm, motivation, and commitment.
  • Report equipment malfunctions, establish effective communication with other departments, and contribute to universal unit activities like responding to call lights, passing meal trays, and transporting patients.
  • Perform core patient care technician responsibilities including ADLs, point of care testing, dressings, restraints, bladder scans, specimen collections, IV and Foley catheter procedures, phlebotomy, and achieving competencies. Perform advanced skills as needed.
  • Assist with physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies, provide feedback on patient care, and instruct patients and families under RN supervision. Apply, monitor, and remove restraints as per protocol.
  • Receive feedback constructively, identify learning needs, participate in self-review, and engage in departmental projects and quality initiatives. Adhere to policies and safety procedures, document appropriately, and perform timely patient transports.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including clerical functions and possibly medication transport, within scope of practice.
  • Meet minimum educational and experience requirements: High school diploma or equivalent; either 2 years healthcare experience or 1 year experience with clinical rotation or health sciences degree; complete professional contributions annually; successfully complete PCT specialist class and system training; CPR certification within 30 days; ACLS preferred.
  • Certifications: BLS or CPR required; ACLS preferred.
Additional Requirements:
  • Effective communication skills, ability to perform basic information system tasks, and preferred experience as a nursing student, EMT, or Paramedic.
  • May handle medications and transport them between departments as needed.
