PURPOSE AND SCOPE: Functions as part of the dialysis health care team in providing safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse in accordance with organization policies, procedures, and training and in compliance with regulations set forth by the corporation, state, and federal agencies. Responsible for the setup and operation of hemodialysis machines. Assist in the maintenance of a safe and clean working environment. Supports the organization commitment to the Quality Enhancement Program (QEP) and CQI Activities, including those related to patient satisfaction and actively participates in process improvement activities that enhance the likelihood that patients will achieve the organization Quality Enhancement Goals (QEP).

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Patient Related Education: Assist other health care members in providing patient-specific detailed education regarding adequacy measures where appropriate - Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), and regarding disease process/access.
  2. Treatment: Welcome assigned patients and inquire as to their wellbeing since their last treatment. Evaluate vascular access for patency, perform vascular access cannulation, administer heparin as delegated or allowed by law, obtain vital signs and weight pre- and post-treatment, initiate dialysis, evaluate intradialytic problems, monitor response, document, and handle discontinuation procedures including hemostasis and patient evaluation prior to discharge.
  3. Staff Related: Assist in training applicable direct care staff under supervision of a nurse.
  4. Education/Communication: Follow policies, maintain environment safety and cleanliness, disinfect equipment, and prepare for dialysis treatment including alarm testing and system initiation.
  5. Record Keeping: Participate in CQI activities, accurately enter treatment data, review treatment sheets for completeness, prepare patient charts, and manage lab specimens.
  6. Infection Control: Support infection control practices, participate in audits, and reinforce patient and staff education.
  7. Transitional Care Unit: Follow new patients through initial weeks, reinforce education, coordinate care, and assist with home dialysis education and supply management.
  8. Physical Demands and Working Conditions: Be aware of physical requirements, including lifting and movement, and work environment conditions. Employees must pass color blindness tests and may be exposed to infectious materials.
  9. Education and Licenses: High school diploma or G.E.D., certification requirements, state licensure, and demonstrated organizational commitment.
  10. Experience and Skills: Prior patient care experience preferred; successful completion of dialysis training and CPR certification required.
