Summary of Job Duties: This posting will be used to fill multiple positions.

The Patient Care Technician (PCT) is a trained member of the unit-based team who supports the ongoing delivery of care to assigned patients in the Immediate Care Unit (F4). F4 is a 30-bed blended ICU and Intermediate care unit providing care for a wide variety of patient populations, primarily focused on trauma and acute care surgery. Common diagnoses include traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, blunt, penetrating, and orthopedic trauma, as well as geriatric falls. Care is also provided for surgical patients following abdominal surgeries and patients requiring long-term mechanical ventilation. Education is provided to staff that includes the basic critical care course, dysrhythmia course, advanced cardiac life support certification, and trauma nursing core certification.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • High School Diploma/GED and successful completion of patient care technician course within 3 months of hire.
  • Excellent communication skills, ability to follow oral instructions, basic computer skills, strong work ethics and accountability.
  • Ability to lift 100 lbs. to waist height.

Preferred:

  • Certification as a nursing assistant or military corpsman,
  • Previous Patient Care experience in an acute care setting.
  • Critical Care experience

The Patient Care Technician works under the direct supervision of the R.N. and performs tasks and duties which do not require a license, professional judgment or intervention. The PCT must pass the required competencies. The PCT works within the Department of Nursing standards. The PCT adheres to UAMS clinical programs, policies, procedures and standards and guest care guidelines.

  • Obtains patient report and maintains ongoing communication with R.N. regarding patient care/changes in condition; informs nurse of patient requests or complaints.
  • Assists with admission, transfer, and discharge of patients.
  • Transports patients to other areas of the hospital as directed.
  • Carries out the Plan of Care for Patient using a Multidisciplinary Approach as Delegated by Team Leader.
  • Communicates effectively with other team members to facilitate patient care.
  • Accepts directions from R.N.s and team members.
  • Follows through on delegated patient care activities.
  • Provides appropriate grooming/oral hygiene and comfort measures and assists patients with activities (ambulation, up in chair, turn and reposition).
  • Documents all patient care activities/tasks, vital signs, ADL, wave tests, I&O's accurately and timely and per unit and department standards.
  • Assists patients and visitors with information and/or solutions to problems.
  • Serves as resource person to support department members in performance of duties.
  • Notifies appropriate staff members of problems requiring prompt intervention.

May perform other duties as assigned.

All new Patient Care Technicians are required to complete 5 weeks of training Monday - Friday 8:00AM - 5:00PM after being hired.

Employees in this role must be fitted for, capable of donning and performing routine tasks in personal protective equipment including N95 masks, Powered Air Purifying Respirators (PAPR), or Controlled Air Purifying Respirators (CAPR).
