Job summary

North Alabama Medical Center is seeking a Patient Care Assistant (PCA) in its Float Pool on a PRN basis. You will provide basic patient support under RN supervision and gain hands-on clinical experience across hospital units as an actively enrolled nursing student.

The role offers a minimum of 24 hours per month with flexible self-scheduling and no weekends or holiday coverage. This environment emphasizes teamwork, learning, and professional growth in nursing.

Qualifications

• Must be currently enrolled in or accepted into nursing school.
• PCA/DCA, SRNA, or EMT experience preferred but not required.
• Current BLS certification, can be obtained after hire.
• Handle with Care preferred.

Responsibilities

• Performs basic patient care as delegated by an RN, including monitoring vital signs and intake/output.
• Assists patients with activities of daily living and mobility.
• Observes and promptly reports abnormal findings to nursing staff.
• Maintains clean and safe patient rooms and common areas.
• Documents care and activities per unit standards.

Our Patient Care Assistant (PCA) Float Pool is a Per Diem (PRN) opportunity designed for actively enrolled nursing students to gain hands‑on clinical experience across a variety of hospital units. In this dynamic role, students support patient care while working alongside experienced healthcare professionals, building foundational skills and broad clinical exposure. This flexible position offers a collaborative environment that enhances learning, confidence, and career development in nursing.

How You'll Contribute

• Performs basic patient care as delegated by an RN, including monitoring vital signs, possible blood glucose measurements, and accurate intake/output recording.
• Assists patients with activities of daily living (bathing, grooming, eating, toileting, ambulation).
• Observes and promptly reports abnormal physical, mental, or emotional findings to nursing staff.
• Maintains clean, safe, and well‑stocked patient rooms and common areas.
• Manages the tech desk and supports nursing/physician staff and overall department throughput.
• Documents care and activities per unit standards.
• Performs other duties as assigned; participates in performance improvement and required education.

Applicants should have a High School Diploma (or equivalent). Additional requirements include:

• Must be currently enrolled in or accepted into nursing school. Candidates must provide proof (acceptance letter, school schedule, or student ID badge).
• PCA/DCA , SRNA, or EMT Experience preferred but not required
