The Patient Care Assistant provides basic direct patient care as delegated by clinical professional personnel, following delegation law, rules, and current education. The PCA maintains a clean, safe environment for patients and visitors.

Responsibilities

Patient Population (Clinical Only)

• Engages in population-appropriate communication, understands growth and development milestones, and provides clear instructions to patients and families.
• Involves family/guardians in assessment and care, identifies physical limitations, and responds to behavioral health issues.
• Performs treatments, administers medication, operates equipment safely, and recognizes signs of abuse or neglect.

Patient Care

• Provides culturally and age-appropriate care, measures vital signs, records observations, assists with ADLs, skin care, tubing, transfers, and ambulation.
• Performs specimen collection, hygiene, positioning, feeding, and monitors patient status.

Communication

• Reports patient observations to RN, updates patient information, and documents treatments.

Environment

• Maintains a clean, safe, and organized environment, reports maintenance issues.

Teamwork

• Participates in admissions, transfers, discharges, and demonstrates respectful cooperation.

Safety Measures

• Ensures call lights are within reach, applies safety devices, and uses proper body mechanics and precautions.

Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED required. STNA registry required for State Tested Nursing Assistant. Minimum 0-6 months experience; preferred 1-2 years.
