Summary of Primary Function/General Purpose of Position

The Student Nurse provides direct patient care under the guidance of the Registered Nurse or designated healthcare professional in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations and within the policies, procedures, and guidelines of Bon Secours Mercy Health.

Essential Job Functions
  1. Supports the nurse in the application of the nursing process under RN supervision.
  2. Develops critical thinking skills through collaboration with the RN to ensure quality patient care.
  3. Seeks educational opportunities related to nursing practice and critical thinking.
  4. Provides basic patient care, including care and comfort, recording vital signs, personal hygiene, and mobility, including specialty duties.
  5. Acts as a liaison between patient and nurse to report changes or concerns.
  6. Provides high-level customer service to patients, families, visitors, and staff.
  7. Documents patient care accurately and timely.
  8. Participates in hand-offs and reports pertinent information upon patient transfer.
  9. Performs delegated tasks once competency is validated.
Education

HS/GED required. Currently enrolled in a nursing program with at least one clinical nursing course and rotation completed.

Certifications

BLS preferred.

Training

Must have completed first clinical rotation. EPIC EHR training preferred.

Work Experience

Recent experience in acute or long-term care preferred.

Working Conditions

Includes periods of high stress, potential exposure to physical altercations, adverse weather, noise, hazardous substances, blood and body fluids, and working alone. Travel may be required.

Patient Population

Care provided across all age groups: neonates, infants, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics. Must be able to assess and interpret patient data relevant to age and development.

Physical Requirements

Includes lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, kneeling, crawling, climbing, balancing, bending, sitting, walking, and standing.

Additional Physical Requirements

Manual dexterity, shift work, maneuvering patients, sensory abilities, and exposure to various risks.
