Job summary

Brown University Health is seeking an Enrollment/Financial Counselor to interview and register patients for Emergency/Trauma Center or Ambulatory care, collect demographic and insurance information, and document all data in the on-line system. The role involves determining welfare eligibility, discussing balances, arranging payment terms, obtaining authorizations, and contacting insurance carriers as needed.

Requires high school education and strong communication skills.

Qualifications

• High School education with math and computer courses.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Persuasive collection techniques and ability to set payment terms.
• Full knowledge of third party health insurance claims processing, coverage and documentation.
• Proficient in math and operating on-line data entry terminals.
• Experience with hospital billing systems and PMAS accounting.

Responsibilities

• Competes Hill-Burton application when patient lacks insurance coverage.
• Requires patient to sign statement of financial responsibility.
• Assists patient to apply for welfare coverage.
• Determines eligibility for Rhode Island Hospital free service for clinic visits.
• Advises Supervising Advocate of patients lacking coverage or income.
• Completes documentation to initiate commercial insurance, Workers' Compensation and CHAMPUS claims.
• Verifies third-party insurance plan numbers and benefits.
• Documents information in PMAS accounting notes.
• Contacts insurer for treatment authorization and co-payment details.
• Obtains authorization for treatment from health plans.
• Discusses existing balances and arranges payment schedules.
• Requests coverage evidence or payment ranges for services.
• Completes financial information for payment arrangements.
• Completes lien forms when appropriate.
• Collects cash/credit card payments for services.
• Posts payments to the general ledger.
• Prepares bank deposits twice daily.
• Determines priority of health insurance coverage.
• Registers patients online in the system.
• Embosses ID cards to update patient records.
• Registers patients for PAC operating room and clinics.
• Takes operating room bookings and initiates charge vouchers.
• Notifies authorities in emergencies as required by RI DOH regulations.
• Follows up on third-party documentation from clinics.
