Description:

Accountability Objectives:

Responsible for performing the Patient Access process, scheduling surgical and non-surgical procedures in SurgiNet. Coordinates multiple services in proper sequence, accommodating department's special needs for each service. Collaborates with multiple departments to optimize resource utilization while considering physician preferences and patient needs. Obtains accurate pre-registration, insurance information, and procedure codes for billing.

Displays courteous, professional behavior, proactively develops customer relationships, and prioritizes customer satisfaction.

Position Qualifications:

Minimum Education, Licensure / Certification and Experience Required:

Education: High school diploma, GED, or equivalent required. Courses in word processing or medical terminology preferred. College classes in business, public relations, or medical fields desirable.

Licensure / Certification: None

Experience: Experience with scheduling in Cerner Enterprise or SurgiNet systems. Accurate typing skills (40 wpm), experience with medical terminology, ICD-9-CM, ICD-10-CM coding, and knowledge of third-party payers preferred.

Special Skills / Aptitudes:

Ability to gather verbal information via telephone and enter data into a computer simultaneously. Good communication and interpersonal skills. Organized, able to problem-solve, work independently, and provide excellent customer service.

Duties / Responsibilities:

  1. Schedule procedures independently, considering case complexity and coordinating with hospital departments.
  2. Obtain registration demographics and insurance information via telephone or fax for accurate billing.
  3. Retrieve procedure codes to ensure correct patient classification and revenue capture.
  4. Identify and resolve scheduling conflicts related to time, resources, equipment, or staff.
  5. Collaborate with clinical personnel for add-on or emergent procedures and resolve scheduling conflicts.
  6. Coordinate hospital services in proper sequence, respecting managed care and clinical standards.
  7. Inform surgeons or office schedulers of preparations for appointments.
  8. Independently troubleshoot scheduling issues and system problems.
  9. Work with the Perioperative Team to optimize scheduling efficiency.
  10. Review departmental reports for scheduling issues and resolve them.
  11. Maintain excellent customer service and communication skills.
  12. Utilize departmental reference manuals and maintain confidentiality of patient records.
  13. Participate in meetings, quality improvement, and perform other duties as assigned.
  14. Uphold the mission and values of St. Joseph Mercy Oakland and adhere to applicable laws and policies.
  15. Ensure accurate charge entry for patients and services, participate in revenue management education, and assist with equipment tracking and maintenance.
  16. Proficiently use electronic health records for documentation and care management.

Working Conditions:

  • Primarily sitting using a computer and phone (up to 90% of shift).
  • Normal office environment with minimal exposure to hazards.
  • Typically Monday through Friday; minimal overtime may be required.
