Accountability Objectives:

Responsible for performing the Patient Access process, scheduling surgical and non-surgical procedures in SurgiNet. Coordinates multiple services in proper sequence, collaborating with various departments to optimize resource utilization while accommodating physician and patient needs. Obtains accurate pre-registration, insurance information, and procedure codes for billing. Demonstrates professionalism, develops customer relationships, and prioritizes customer satisfaction.

Position Qualifications
  • Education: High school diploma, GED, or equivalent required. Courses in word processing or medical terminology preferred. College classes in business, public relations, or medical field desirable.
  • Licensure / Certification: None required.
  • Experience: Experience with Cerner Enterprise or SurgiNet scheduling systems. Accurate typing at 40 wpm, medical terminology knowledge, ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CM coding experience, and familiarity with third-party payers preferred.
  • Skills: Ability to gather verbal information via phone, enter data accurately, communicate courteously, organize tasks, problem-solve, work independently, and provide excellent customer service.
Duties / Responsibilities
  1. Schedule procedures independently, considering complex cases and coordinating with hospital departments.
  2. Obtain registration demographics and insurance information to ensure accurate billing.
  3. Retrieve procedure codes to ensure correct patient classification for revenue.
  4. Identify and resolve scheduling conflicts related to time, resources, or staff.
  5. Collaborate with clinical personnel for add-on/emergent procedures and resource conflicts.
  6. Coordinate hospital services according to system rules and standards.
  7. Inform surgeons and confirm appointments with office schedulers.
  8. Problem-solve scheduling issues and troubleshoot system problems.
  9. Work with the Perioperative Team to optimize scheduling efficiency.
  10. Review reports to resolve scheduling issues.
  11. Maintain excellent customer service and communication skills.
  12. Keep reference manuals current and maintain patient confidentiality.
  13. Participate in meetings, quality improvement, and perform additional duties as assigned.
  14. Ensure correct charges are entered, participate in revenue management, and monitor equipment.
  15. Proficiently use electronic health records for documentation and care management.
Working Conditions
  • Primarily sitting for long periods (up to 90%) using a computer and phones.
  • Normal office environment with minimal exposure to hazards.
  • Typically Monday through Friday, with minimal overtime.
