Job summary

UMass Memorial Health is hiring for a Financial Clearance Specialist who verifies patient information, collects co-pays and balances, and ensures pre-service authorization. You will be the frontline for patient access and billing support in a dynamic hospital setting.

Responsibilities include contacting insurance providers for eligibility, estimating patient liability, processing payments, and coordinating with Financial Counselors to resolve issues before services are rendered.

Qualifications

• 4+ years in a business office setting, hospital revenue cycle preferred, physician office or collection agency experience.
• Experience in a healthcare environment is required.
• Familiarity with hospital computer systems and third party collections is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Initiates contact with insurance companies to obtain eligibility and gather accurate patient billing information, and perform collections on outstanding accounts.
• Accurately estimates patient financial liability (copayments, deductibles, coinsurances, deposits, etc.) and answers patient inquiries.
• Receives and processes patient payments.
• Ensures pre-certification authorization or referral is in place prior to service.
• Refer patients to Financial Counselors or Business Office as needed.
• Reschedules appointments when required due to financial circumstances.
• Enters clear notes concerning financial clearance status in system.
• Demonstrates knowledge of department policies and adheres to the Financial Clearance Policy.
• Assesses gaps in patient coverage to determine financial exposure.
• Responds flexibly to changing situations and reprioritizes work as needed.
• Performs other duties to ensure smooth department operation.
