Job summary

UMass Memorial Health is seeking a Financial Clearance Specialist to verify patient information, collect balances, and ensure pre-service approvals. The role supports accurate financial responsibility assessment for scheduled services.

Qualifications

• Minimum: High School Diploma or GED; Associate degree preferred.
• 4+ years in a business office setting; hospital revenue cycle preferred.
• Healthcare environment experience required.
• Knowledge of third-party collections and reimbursement preferred.
• Working knowledge of personal computers and business office applications; hospital computer systems a plus.

Responsibilities

• Initiates contact with insurance companies to obtain eligibility and gather accurate patient billing information.
• Estimates patient financial liability (copayments, deductibles, coinsurances, deposits) and explains variables to patients.
• Receives and processes patient payments.
• Ensures pre-certification authorization or referral is in place prior to service.
• Refers patients to Financial Counselors or Business Office as needed.
• Reschedules appointments as required due to financial circumstances or at patient request.
• Enters clear notes on financial clearance status in the system.
• Adheres to Financial Clearance Policy in all patient cases.
• Assesses gaps in patient coverage to determine financial exposure prior to services.
• Responds flexibly to changing priorities and department needs.
• Performs other duties to ensure smooth operation of the department.
