Job summary

The Laboratory Assistant in the Pathology department at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, ME, is a full-time role supporting clerical and specimen processing activities within CLIA-aligned guidelines.

You will handle computer entry, filing, phone communications, and greet patients, while maintaining accurate test terminology knowledge and assisting in phlebotomy-related tasks and equipment handling under supervision as required.

Qualifications

• HS Diploma or Equivalent required.
• Minimum 1 year of clinical laboratory experience performing similar functions preferred.
• State Certified CPT I or CPT II if the laboratory is located in a state where required.
• Current BCLS (AHA) certificate upon hire and maintain current preferred.

Responsibilities

• The Laboratory Assistant performs computer entry, filing, telephone communication and other clerical duties.
• Demonstrates good telephone etiquette and can greet patients and visitors politely.
• Possesses good communication skills and knowledge of test terminology.
• Demonstrates knowledge of phlebotomy and equipment used in collecting specimens from newborns to geriatric patients.
• Processes specimens for pathology, microbiology, immunology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry, and blood bank.
• Keeps storage areas, trays, centrifuges, and collection areas clean and organized.
• With proper training, may perform instrument maintenance, quality control procedures and basic culture work.
• Other tasks may be assigned by the department manager/director.
