Salary range: $18.95 – $24.28 per hour.
Job Summary
The Transit Operator I provides reliable, safe, and efficient transportation services on City of High Point transit routes. The role requires operating a transit bus, assisting passengers (including those with mobility devices), performing inspections, maintaining records, and ensuring compliance with all safety regulations.
Essential Tasks & Responsibilities
- Operate the bus on assigned routes and schedules, ensuring safe and timely transportation for passengers.
- Perform pre‑departure inspections of the bus and related equipment, reporting any defects to maintain smooth operations.
- Maintain trip records, including fare collections, mileage, and vehicle conditions, keeping accurate logs for each route.
- Assist passengers in boarding and alighting, including those using wheelchairs or other mobility devices, and secure wheelchairs with tie‑down straps.
- Collect fares and issue tickets, handling transfer slips to ensure passengers’ journeys are seamless.
- Announce bus stops clearly so passengers are aware of their next destination.
- Provide basic schedule information to passengers, answering questions about routes and arrival times.
- Communicate via two‑way radio to report traffic delays, accidents, downed traffic signs, and faulty signals to office staff and other personnel.
- Perform post‑shift inspections of the bus and report any defects, ensuring the vehicle is ready for the next operator.
- Complete incident and accident reports or document any unusual circumstances to ensure accurate records.
- Adhere to all safety regulations and follow prescribed accident procedures as necessary.
- Perform additional duties as assigned to support smooth transit operations.
- Ensure all work complies with OSHA and City safety standards and policies, maintaining a safe environment for all passengers and staff.
Qualifications
- Must be at least 21 years old.
- Valid Class B North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License with Passenger (P) Endorsement.
- Six (6) months of verifiable experience operating a similar or larger commercial vehicle.
- Ability to drive a transit bus in typical urban traffic and work well under time constraints and stress.
- Flexibility to work various schedules, including fill‑ins, split shifts, nights, weekends, and holidays (vacation and holiday leave subject to coverage needs).
- Proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing in English.
- Preferred: Twelve (12) months of verifiable experience operating a similar or larger commercial vehicle.
- Preferred: Bilingual skills (French or Spanish).
Physical Requirements
Hearing/Speaking: Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external customers.
Visual Acuity: Far vision 20/25, near vision 20/30, good depth perception and field of vision to safely operate the vehicle.
Physical Strength: Ability to exert up to 30 pounds of force occasionally and manage lightweight tasks continuously.
Physical Demands: Extending arms, holding, grasping, picking, and handling tasks with performance under varying weather conditions.
Mental Activity: Reasoning, mathematical skills for change and reporting, and effective communication, including PA system/radio usage.
