An Overview
The Alexandria Police Department is looking for a few qualified individuals for a rewarding part-time opportunity to connect with the community and provide safety to our smallest citizens. This is a great opportunity for individuals with flexible schedules including students, stay-at-home parents, and retirees. Each applicant should work well with children and be willing and able to work in all types of inclement weather conditions. Reliable transportation is required. The position requires some flexibility because there may be a need to respond to emergency schedule changes. The crossing guard must be open and available to work any assigned school post.
What You Should Bring
The ideal candidate should have the willingness to work in adverse conditions, such as rain, heat, and cold. A candidate should be able to understand and apply the rules of the road while crossing pedestrians through intersections and at crosswalks. This will also require the candidate to stand on their feet for approximately one hour. The candidate should be able to communicate clearly, effectively, and courteously with colleagues and the public.

Minimum Requirements
High School Diploma or GED; one year of experience working with children; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Candidates must have the ability to follow instructions, establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and the public, and be punctual at school posts. Candidates should exercise mature and alert judgment and be stern but tactful, courteous, and respectful with the public, particularly with school-aged children. Some knowledge of traffic laws is required.
