Job summary

Penn State Abington seeks a Professional Physics Tutor to support undergraduate students in the Chaiken Center for Student Success. The tutor will provide one-on-one Physics tutoring, develop workshops, and create a Physics resource Canvas shell to align with course objectives.

The role requires strong communication, collaboration with faculty, and careful documentation of student progress using Starfish and related tools. Starting at $25/hour.

Qualifications

  • A Master’s degree (preferred) in Physics or a related discipline, 3+ years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Understanding of and familiarity with effective assessment practices focusing on academic support services.
  • Excellent written, verbal communication, and presentation skills.
  • Innovation and creativity in program development.
  • Proven presentation, group facilitation, and teaching skills.
  • Extensive ability to collaborate and develop relationships with a wide range of constituents.
  • Ability to work with a diverse student population.
  • Outstanding teamwork abilities.
  • Ability to work late afternoon/early evening and, on occasion, weekend hours.

Responsibilities

  • Provide individual Physics tutoring for students.
  • Assign practice exercises as needed.
  • Mentor students in completion and review of class assignments.
  • Assist students in preparing for exams.
  • Assist students in developing greater self‑directed learning strategies.
  • Create and maintain a Physics‑focused Canvas course shell that serves as a repository of Physics resources for students.
  • Monitor scheduling and documentation through Starfish.
  • Maintain detailed records: Starfish Outcome Notes, Client Report Forms, Satisfaction Surveys, and other assessment measures.
  • Create and compile Physics‑focused instructional and marketing materials.
  • Develop and deliver workshops, presentations, and online resources for students on a range of Physics topics.
  • Provide administrative support for the Chaiken Center for Student Success.
  • Serve as a liaison to academic departments and related services.
  • Perform intentional outreach and interact directly with underserved and under‑resourced students.
  • Lead/coordinate special projects or initiatives as assigned.
  • Collaborate with professors to ensure that tutoring complements classroom instruction.

Job Description and Position Requirements

Penn State Abington seeks an engaging and dynamic candidate to fill a newly created opening as a Professional Physics Tutor. This role will work in the Chaiken Center for Student Success to provide tutoring in Physics to undergraduate university students. The tutor will also develop workshops, structured academic initiatives, and other collaborative opportunities that engage faculty, student organizations, and the campus community. The Professional Tutor will interact with faculty and staff to promote the services of the Chaiken Center and to ensure that tutoring services align with course objectives. The Professional Tutor will be responsible for maintaining records for each student tutored, such as Starfish Outcome Notes, Client Report Forms, Satisfaction Surveys, and other assessment measures.

Compensation: The starting rate for this job is $25/hour.
