Job summary

Penn State Abington seeks an engaging Professional Writing Tutor to provide in-person tutoring across the curriculum in the Chaiken Center for Student Success. The tutor will create workshops, support faculty, and maintain detailed student records.

Responsibilities include tutoring, assigning practice, mentoring, exam prep, developing writing resources, and collaborating with departments to align tutoring with course objectives.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree preferred with strong academic background.
  • Experience assessing and supporting writing across curricula.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills.
  • Creativity in program development and outreach to students.

Responsibilities

  • Provides individual writing tutoring for students.
  • Assigns practice exercises as needed.
  • Mentors students in completing and reviewing assignments.
  • Assists students in exam preparation.
  • Helps students build reading comprehension and self-directed learning.
  • Creates and maintains a writing resources Canvas shell.
  • Monitors scheduling and documentation through Starfish.
  • Maintains detailed records and outcomes surveys.
  • Develops writing-focused instructional and marketing materials.
  • Develops and delivers workshops and online resources.
  • Provides administrative support for the Chaiken Center.
  • Acts as liaison to academic departments and services.
  • Performs outreach to under-served students.
  • Leads and coordinates special projects as assigned.
  • Collaborates with professors to align tutoring with coursework.

Job Description and Position Requirements

Penn State Abingtonseeksengagingand dynamic candidate to filla newlycreated positionofProfessionalWritingTutor.This openingis primarily in person andwill workin the Chaiken Center forStudent SuccesstoprovidetutoringinWriting across the curriculumto undergraduate universitystudents.Thetutorwill also develop workshops, structured academic initiatives, as well as other collaborative opportunities that engage faculty, student organizations, and other members of the campus community. The Professional Tutor will interact with faculty and staff to promote the services of the Chaiken Centerand to ensure that tutoring services align with the courseobjectives. The Professional Tutor willbe responsible formaintaininga record for each student tutored, e.g.,Starfish Outcome Notes,ClientReportForms,Satisfaction Surveys, etc.Becauseof the needs of the campus, the ideal candidate will have astrong social/behavioral sciencesbackground.

Job Duties
  • ProvidesindividualWritingtutoring for students.

  • Assignspractice exercises as needed.

  • Mentorsstudents in completion and review of class assignments.

  • Assistsstudents in preparing for exams.

  • Assistsstudents in developingstronger readingcomprehensionskills andgreater self-directed learning strategies.

  • CreatesandmaintainsaWriting-focusedCanvas course shellwhich will serve as a repository ofWritingresources tutors can use as they work withtheirstudents.

  • Monitorsscheduling &documentation through Starfish.

  • Maintainsdetailed records: Starfish Outcome Notes, Client Report Forms, Satisfaction Surveys, and other assessment measures.

  • Createsand compilesWriting-focusedinstructional and marketingmaterials.

  • Developsand deliversworkshops, presentations, and online resources for students on a range ofWritingtopics.

  • Providesadministrative support fortheChaikenCenter for StudentSuccess.

  • Servesas a liaison to academic departments and related services.

  • Performsintentionaloutreach and interact directly withunder-served andunder-resourcedstudents.

  • Leads/coordinatesspecial projects or initiatives as assigned.

  • Collaborates with professors to ensure that tutoring complements classroom instruction.

Requirements and Qualifications
Successful candidates willpossess:
  • AMaster’sdegree (preferred) inEnglish, Composition, Social/Behavioral Sciences,or a related discipline,3+ years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Understanding of and familiarity with effective assessment practices focusing on academic support services.

  • Excellent written, verbal communication, and presentation skills.

  • Innovation and creativity in program development.

  • Proven presentation, group facilitation, and teaching skills.

  • Extensive ability to collaborate and develop relationships with a wide range of constituents.

  • Ability to work with a diverse student population.

  • Outstanding teamwork abilities.

  • Ability to workafternoon/early evening and, on occasion,weekend hours.
