Job summary

University of Chicago Medicine is seeking a Nursing Support Assistant (CNA) to perform essential patient care tasks under RN supervision in the 3CN Surgical unit at the Hyde Park on-site location. The role includes assisting with daily living activities, vital signs, specimen collection, discharge prep, and documentation.

Candidates must have a high school diploma, be HCWR-listed (Illinois CNA) or a nursing student, and hold CPR/BLS certification.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Must be listed on the IDPH Health Care Worker Registry (HCWR) as an Illinois CNA OR a nursing student who has passed the written competency exam and is listed on the HCWR.
• CPR/BLS Certification required.
• Ability to read and write, perform simple mathematical calculations, follow oral and written instructions, perform variety of tasks without direct supervision and perform duties requiring continuous physical effort.
• Ability to effectively communicate verbally and/or in written form.
• Ability to work in partnership with management and staff.
• Occasional lifting may be heavy and awkward, over 50 lbs.
• Moderate to extreme physical effort such as walking, standing, performing CPR, and lifting materials, equipment, objects and/or patients may be required.
• Vision, hearing, and sense of touch must be adequate to enable one to quickly and accurately perform tasks such as reading small print, defining details, sending and receiving clear and accurate oral communication.
• Frequent periods of concentrated or focused attention will be needed to interpret visual, auditory, and sensory inputs.

Responsibilities

• Provides basic patient care activities including vital signs and basic tests.
• Assists patients with activities of daily living with proper aseptic techniques.
• Assists with personal hygiene, ambulation, and nourishment.
• Collects patient specimens and weighs patients as assigned.
• Assists with discharge and transfer preparation.
• Maintains patient environment and room readiness for admission/transfer.
• Maintains supplies and equipment and the environment.
• Communicates and documents activities accurately.
• Initiates CPR and calls a physician.
• Performs receptionist duties for the assigned area when requested.
