Job summary

University of Chicago Medicine is seeking a Nursing Support Assistant (CNA) to assist with essential patient care under RN supervision in the 3CS Surgical unit at Hyde Park. The role focuses on direct care activities, observation, and accurate documentation to support patient flow and safety.

The CNA will perform basic tasks such as vital signs, hygiene, and specimen collection, and will assist in discharge or transfer preparations.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent is required.
• Must be listed on the IDPH HCWR as an Illinois CNA OR a nursing student who passed the written competency exam and listed on HCWR.
• CPR/BLS Certification required.
• Ability to read and write, perform simple math, follow instructions, work without direct supervision.
• Able to communicate effectively verbally and/or in written form.
• Ability to work with management and staff.
• Occasional lifting may be heavy (>50 lbs).
• Moderate to extreme physical effort such as walking, standing, CPR, lifting materials or patients may be required.
• Vision, hearing, and sense of touch must be adequate for task performance.
• Frequent concentrated attention to interpret inputs.

Responsibilities

• Provides basic patient care including vital signs and simple tests.
• Assists patients with activities of daily living with aseptic technique.
• Assists with hygiene, ambulation, and nourishment.
• Collects patient specimens and weights patients.
• Assists with discharge and transfer preparation.
• Maintains patient environment and prepares rooms for admissions/transfers.
• Keeps supplies and equipment organized and logs activities.
• Communicates and documents activities accurately in records/logs.
• Initiates CPR and calls appropriate medical staff.
• Performs receptionist duties for assigned area.
