PT LIBRARY ASSISTANT, YOUTH SERVICES, NEWBURGH FREE LIBRARY

SUMMARY

The Newburgh Free Library is looking for a Part Time Library Assistant in our Youth Services Department. The ideal candidate will be an outgoing, creative, team player who enjoys working with youth of all ages, birth to 17. The successful candidate will be adept at providing general assistance to children, parents, teachers, caregivers and other adults regarding collections, resources, programs, and services. The Newburgh Free Library is a mid-sized urban library serving the people of the City of Newburgh, the Town of Newburgh, and the Town of New Windsor. The Main Library in the City of Newburgh has beautiful views, sitting atop a hill overlooking the Hudson River. With over 60 staff members, 2 locations, and a service area of approximately 60,000 people, the Newburgh Free Library is a bustling place. This Part Time Library Assistant will report to a Librarian I. This title is a union position, 17.5 hours a week, requiring one night a week and one Saturday a month.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Plan and conduct programs including but not limited to crafts, story times, book clubs etc. as needed under the supervision of the Youth Services department staff.
• Facilitate programs conducted by collaborators, as assigned.
• Maintain and manage records and information necessary for department services and programs, including statistics and records to evaluate services to youth.
• Maintain and develop informational materials and resources for department (i.e. flyers, brochures, booklists, calendars, etc.) using Canva and other online tools.
• May be assigned to represent the Library at events in the schools and in the community.
• Works with department staff to evaluate and monitor materials, services and programs and make recommendations for change and improvement.
• Performs general reference and readers’ advisory at service desks.
• Provides general assistance for all department programs and activities.
• Provides general clerical assistance in support of department staff.
• Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/QUALITIES

• Working familiarity with library procedures and practices.
• Proficiency with current technology, devices, and social media.
• Demonstrated knowledge of trends in children’s programming, activity and literacy.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Preference will be given to Bilingual candidates

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor’s Degree

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

• Physical demands include the ability to lift and carry books weighing 10-20 pounds, working at a public service desk with frequent change of sitting and standing positions, and repetitive typing on computer keyboards.
• Current driver's license and ability to travel to required locations.

WAGES

$26.22 to $36.42/hr, depending on experience.
