Job summary

The Newburgh Free Library, located in the City of Newburgh, is seeking a Librarian I for Tech Services and Collection Development. The role is full-time, 35 hours per week, with one night per week and one Saturday per month.

The department focuses on tech services and collection development for a diverse community of about 60,000 residents. Responsibilities include reference work, collection management, KOHA processing, program planning, and collaboration with department heads.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Provide reference and readers’ advisory services at public desks.
• Manage museum pass program including reviews and circulation.
• Maintain periodicals collection and select new items.

• Collaborate with department heads on displays and events.
• Process orders in KOHA and handle invoicing with accounts payable.
• Coordinate or present at least one adult program per quarter.
• Plan and assist with offsite outreach events.
• Supervise staff as needed.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

FT LIBRARIAN I, TECH SERVICES AND COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT, NEWBURGH FREE LIBRARY

Summary

The Newburgh Free Library seeks an exceptional librarian with energy, big ideas, and exemplary organizational skills to join our Tech Services and Collection Development Department. The Newburgh Free Library is a mid-sized urban library serving the people of the City of Newburgh, the Town of Newburgh, and the Town of New Windsor. The Main Library in the City of Newburgh has beautiful views, sitting atop a hill overlooking the Hudson River. In addition to the Main Library, a Branch location was opened in the Town of Newburgh in 2024. With over 60 staff members, 2 locations, and a service area of approximately 60,000 people, the Newburgh Free Library is a bustling place. The Tech Services and Collection Development Librarian is a union position, 35 hours a week, requiring one night a week and one Saturday a month.

Essential Functions

• Provide reference and readers’ advisory services to all ages at the public service desks
• Manage museum pass program, including annual reviews and circulation process
• Maintain periodicals collection
• Serve as a selector for assigned collections
• Collaborate with department heads to create displays that highlight the library’s collections, programs, services, and current events.
• Receive orders within KOHA and send invoices to accounts payable clerk
• Assist with linking materials
• Coordinate or present a minimum of one program for adults per quarter
• Plan and assist with offsite outreach events
• Supervise subordinate staff as needed
• Other duties as assigned

Salary and Benefits

• Salary range: $57,700.00 - $80,624.00 depending on experience.

Librarian I position is Provisional and Contingent upon results of the Civil Service Exam when issued.

Distinguishing Features of the Class

The work involved responsibility for basic level librarian duties. Employees in this class are expected to perform specific applications of professional duties under the general supervisor of other professional Librarians. Supervision may be exercised over Library Assistants, Clerical Staff, Pages, and Volunteers. Performs related work as required.

Special Requirements

• Physical demands include the ability to lift and carry books weighing 10-20 pounds, working at a public service desk with frequent change of sitting and standing positions, and repetitive typing on computer keyboards.
• Current driver's license and ability to travel to required locations.

Minimum Qualifications to Apply

Master's Degree in Librarianship from a library school that is accredited by the American Library Association or recognized by the NYS Education Department as following accepted education practices.
