Job summary

Montgomery College, Germantown Campus, invites applications for a Part-Time Librarian II. The 20-hour work week runs Monday–Thursday, 10:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m. The exempt, non-bargaining role is grade 29, with occasional schedule adjustments.

The library emphasizes fairness, belonging, and inclusiveness in its environment. Responsibilities include outreach to faculty, liaison duties with academic departments, collection recommendations, and supporting teaching and research.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in library/information science (MLS, MSLS, MLIS, etc.).
  • Three years of progressively responsible professional library experience in academic, research, or public libraries.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of library science applied to academic libraries.
  • Experience with research tools in an online environment and with Library Management Systems and MS Office.
  • Ability to instruct and assist students in the use of library resources.
  • Excellent teamwork and leadership skills, strong listening skills and proficiency at conducting reference interviews.
  • Equivalent combination of education, training, certification and/or experience may be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Perform outreach with faculty and academic departments to foster relationships for learning strategies.
  • Liaise with departments to understand programs and curricula.
  • Establish and maintain relationships and outreach methods with liaison teams.
  • Attend departmental meetings and communicate with faculty regularly.

  • Lead at least one strategic initiative per academic year aligned with division goals.
  • Maintain proficiency with electronic and print resources and modern information technologies.

Job Description

Montgomery College, Germantown Campus, is seeking candidates for aPart-Time Librarian II position. The work schedule is 20 hours aweek, Monday – Thursday, 10:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. This is anon-bargaining, exempt, grade 29 position. Occasional scheduleadjustments may be requested. Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Perform outreach with faculty and academic departments/units tofoster effective relationships for creating dynamic learningstrategies in support of the curriculum and specific student needsin a variety of courses and stages of student development.
  • Familiarize themselves with the needs, attitudes, and internaloperations of the academic departments in which they liaise.
  • Work with librarian supervisor and liaison team to establishand maintain relationships and outreach methods while learningabout programs and curricula for assigned academic departments andplanning for their growth and change accordingly.
  • Attend departmental meetings.
  • Form relationships and regularly communicate with faculty intheir assigned academic department(s).
  • Recommend titles (books, media, reference, eBooks) forpurchase.
  • Work to accommodate requests and needs at each campus and ineach academic area, and collaborate on displays and events withaccess services staff as needed.
  • Lead at least one strategic initiative each academic yearaligned with the Research & Teaching Division's goals.
  • Participate in planning and priority setting for the Researchand Teaching Division's annual goals and priorities.
  • Commit to professional development opportunities (internal andexternal), by participating in conferences, seminars, andprofessional meetings that enhance their knowledge in currentprofessional librarianship practices, and to learn and develop newskills that will improve library services and fulfill unit goalsand objectives.
  • Stay up to date and watch for job related trends in the libraryprofession by reading professional journals, listservs, blogs,etc., in order to maintain and update skills with the latesthardware and software products, trends and their practical use inan information seeking environment.
  • Attend internal workshops and classes to learn new skills,deepen already existing skills, or learn about overall Collegegoals and objectives.
  • Maintain a high level of proficiency with electronic and printresources in a constantly evolving information and technologyenvironment to include web-based social media and networkedtechnologies to enable delivery of real-time reference and distanceinstructional services.
  • Maintain and update skills with the latest hardware andsoftware products, trends, and their practical use in aninformation seeking environment.
  • Maintain proficiency in use of web-based, social media, andnetworked technologies to deliver real-time reference and distanceinstructional service.
  • Create and maintain online library guides using an extensibleweb-based platform.
  • Maintain a high level of interpersonal, intercultural, andintergenerational communication skills required to reach a diverseuser population.
  • Participate on library committees, task groups, orsubcommittees in support of goals and objectives surrounding theLibrary Master Plan and Research and Teaching goals and specialprojects; and/or participate on college governance or collegecommittees with faculty and staff, and/or planning events withfaculty from other departments to establish relationships thatpromote library services and resources.
  • Support library employees by sharing knowledge and encouragingtheir development, in order to build relationships and strengthencollaboration within and between library units.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:

  • Professional experience using research tools in an onlineenvironment such as Internet browsers, Library Management Systemsand current W2 applications, as well as professional experiencewith basic Microsoft Office Software.
  • Ability to instruct and assist students in the use of libraryresources.
  • Excellent teamwork and leadership skills, strong listeningskills and proficiency at conducting reference interviews.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of library science asapplied to the operation of academic libraries.
  • The equivalent combination of education, training,certification and/or experience that provides the requiredknowledge and expertise to perform the essential functions of thejob may be considered.

Hiring Range: $37,134 - $48,279 annually.

Initial salary placement for new hires falls between the minimum and midpoint of the range and is based on relevant candidate experience and internal equity.

The maximum salary for this position is $59,425 annually.

  • Participation in a Maryland State Retirement System plan (Pension or Optional Retirement Plan, depending on the position). If you are already retired from the Maryland State Retirement System, you may not enroll in a Maryland State Retirement System plan at Montgomery College and may have earnings restrictions, per state law.
