Job summary

MercyOne Des Moines, part-time Lab Assistant, supports a variety of laboratory departments by assisting technical staff in collection, processing, analysis, and reporting of tests necessary for patient diagnosis and treatment.

The role involves venipuncture, specimen labeling, LIS data entry, and adherence to safety and quality standards within Trinity Health MercyOne’s clinical laboratory team.

Qualifications

• Laboratory experience and knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
• Strong computer skills with the ability to learn new systems and tools quickly.
• Must be comfortable operating in a collaborative, shared leadership environment.
• Must possess a personal presence characterized by honesty, integrity, and caring.

Responsibilities

• Performs venipunctures, finger sticks, and heel sticks per policy.
• Accepts specimens and requisitions from internal/external customers.
• Identifies patients and specimens with two identifiers and labels correctly.
• Registers and logs specimens in LIS and scans docs.
• Processes specimens: identification, aliquoting, slide prep, handling.
• Resolves problematic specimens and orders with staff.
• Follows safety, infection control, and chemical-handling procedures.
• Uses LIS to support data entry and workflow management.
• Restocks supplies and participates in team projects.
