Job summary

MercyOne Health System Des Moines seeks a Lab Assistant to support multiple laboratory departments. You will assist with collection, processing, and reporting of tests for patient diagnosis and treatment, ensuring accurate specimen handling and timely turnaround.

The role involves venipunctures and specimen management, with emphasis on data integrity and safety. Requires HS diploma or GED and comfort working in a collaborative hospital setting.

Responsibilities

• Performs venipunctures, finger sticks, and heel sticks appropriate to patient age.
• Accepts specimens and requisitions and manages add‑on orders.
• Identifies patients and specimens using two identifiers and labels correctly.
• Registers and logs specimens in LIS and documents required information.
• Performs specimen processing and proper handling per protocols.
• Assists in resolving problematic specimens and test orders with staff and clients.
• Adheres to safety, infection control, and chemical‑handling procedures.
• Operates LIS to support data entry and workflow management.
• Restocks supplies and contributes to departmental projects as assigned.
