Job summary

MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center is seeking a Lab Assistant to support multiple laboratory departments by collecting, processing, analyzing, and reporting tests essential for patient diagnosis and treatment. The role requires meticulous specimen handling and adherence to safety standards.

Schedule: Monday–Friday 8:30am–5pm, rotating weekends. Responsibilities include venipunctures, labeling, LIS entries, and ensuring timely turnaround with data integrity.

Qualifications

• Laboratory experience preferred.
• Strong computer skills and quick learner of new systems.

Responsibilities

• Performs venipunctures, finger sticks, and heel sticks as age-appropriate.
• Accepts specimens and manages add-on orders per procedures.
• Identifies patients and specimens with two identifiers and labels correctly.
• Registers and logs specimens in LIS and ensures data accuracy.
• Performs specimen processing and documentation per protocols.
• Resolves problematic specimens and test orders with staff.
• Follows safety, infection control, and chemical-handling procedures.
• Operates LIS for data entry and workflow management.
• Restocks supplies and participates in department initiatives.
