Job summary

The Water Project is seeking a Part‑Time Director of Human Resources to manage the employee lifecycle, HR compliance, employee relations, performance processes, and compensation support. This senior hands‑on, individual contributor role works with a distributed multi‑state team and focuses on U.S.

HR practices while leveraging a PEO for payroll and benefits. You will establish a predictable weekly schedule with flexibility for time‑sensitive matters, and you will lead with empathy and integrity

Qualifications

• Seven+ years of hands-on human-resources experience with ownership of HR functions.
• Experience handling employee relations, performance concerns, leave and accommodations.
• Strong knowledge of federal/state employment requirements and risk management.
• Experience administering benefits and payroll inputs, policies, and records.
• Experience supporting compensation reviews, performance processes, and recruiting.
• Comfort working independently in a remote environment.

Responsibilities

• Serve as the primary point of contact for policies, benefits, leave, performance, and workplace concerns.
• Manage onboarding, job/status changes, leave coordination, and offboarding from an HR perspective.
• Maintain confidential personnel records and ensure notices are completed.
• Administer and improve the employee handbook, HR policies, and SOPs.
• Coordinate benefits/payroll information through a PEO or Justworks.
• Maintain HR compliance calendar and ensure filings and training are completed on schedule.
• Identify opportunities to simplify processes and improve HR experiences.
• Partner with leadership to define roles, hiring plans, and candidate processes.
• Coordinate job postings, screenings, interviews, offers, and background checks.
