Job summary

Juneau Public Libraries seeks a part-time relief Assistant Library Technician I to staff front desk operations. The role focuses on customer service, helping patrons use the catalog and online resources, and ensuring a welcoming and safe library environment.

Responsibilities include handling lending transactions, assisting with computer resources, and supporting staff with confidential patron interactions while maintaining flexible scheduling. Evening/weekend shifts are required.

Qualifications

• Graduation from high school or the equivalent.
• Six (6) months of customer service experience that included the use of computer systems or databases.
• Post-secondary education in any academic discipline from an accredited college or university may be substituted for the required experience on the basis of 2.67 semester hours (4 quarter hours) for one month of experience.

Responsibilities

• Greeting patrons, opening library accounts, and answering general inquiries both in person and over the phone.
• Assisting patrons in using online resources, the library catalog, and other services such as wireless internet.
• Using discretion and tact when interacting with patrons and provide patron confidentiality as one of the central elements of public service.
• Handling library materials from libraries across the state and can expect to assist patrons in locating library items and checking items in and out, and collecting payment.
• Performing public-service tasks such as registering voters and selling bus passes.
• Library staff employ considerable independent judgement to correct inappropriate conduct including situations with patrons who may be experiencing substance abuse or mental health issues and are potentially violent.
