Job summary

Chesterfield Township is seeking a Part-Time Building Inspector to perform inspections of residential, commercial, and industrial construction ensuring compliance with building codes, township ordinances, approved plans, and Michigan requirements.

The role involves coordinating with contractors, property owners, developers, and Township staff to promote safe, code-compliant construction and accurate documentation within the permitting system.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Considerable experience in building construction, inspection, skilled trades, construction management, or related field.
• Must meet Michigan requirements to perform building inspections for government.
• Must possess and maintain MI licensing/certification for the position.
• Valid Michigan driver’s license with acceptable record.
• Able to complete background/pre-employment checks.

Responsibilities

• Conduct building inspections for residential, commercial, industrial, and other construction within the Township.
• Inspect new construction, additions, alterations, renovations, repairs, demolitions, decks, and other permitted work.
• Perform inspections at various construction stages: footing, foundation, framing, insulation, final, and others.
• Inspect structural components and materials for code compliance and permit adherence.
• Verify work matches approved plans, documents, and code requirements.
• Identify code violations and communicate corrections to contractors and owners.
• Approve compliant work and follow up on corrective actions.
• Review plans, specifications, permits, site information, and related documents.
• Maintain accurate inspection records, reports, photos, and entries in permit systems.
• Respond to questions about building codes and inspection requirements.
• Coordinate inspections with other Township departments as needed.
• Investigate complaints of unsafe or unpermitted construction.
• Handle certificate of occupancy inspections and ensure completion of requirements.
• Assist with identifying unsafe structures for action by Building Official.
• Provide professional customer service while enforcing codes fairly.
• Stay updated on changes to codes and practices; attend training as required.
