Job description

Location: Toms River, New Jersey
Work Setting: Ocean County College
Schedule: As Needed / Based on Student Class Schedules
Position Type: Part-Time / Contract Assignments
Service Delivery: Primarily On-Site, with Remote Assignments as Needed

Position Summary

BETA Systems International (BSI) is seeking qualified American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreters to provide communication access services for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students at Ocean County College in Toms River, New Jersey.

Interpreters will support students during college courses and other approved academic activities. Assignments may include classroom lectures, labs, meetings, student activities, and other College programs.

The College uses interpreters on an as‑needed basis. When possible, the same interpreter will support an assigned student throughout the academic semester to provide continuity of service. BSI's scope includes both in‑person ASL interpretation and remote Video Remote Interpreting (VRI).

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide accurate ASL interpretation between Deaf or Hard of Hearing students and hearing faculty, staff, students, and other participants.

  • Interpret classroom lectures, discussions, labs, meetings, and other academic activities.

  • Convey spoken English into ASL and signed communication into spoken English.

  • Prepare for assignments by reviewing available course or subject matter information.

  • Maintain the meaning, intent, tone, and context of communications.

  • Support consistent access throughout scheduled class periods and assignments.

  • Report to assignments on time and remain available for the full scheduled period.

  • Coordinate with BSI regarding schedules, changes, cancellations, and coverage needs.

  • Maintain student privacy and confidentiality.

  • Follow professional interpreting ethics and standards.

  • Provide remote interpretation when assigned and maintain the equipment and internet connection needed for video‑based services.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must meet the certification requirements established for this contract. BSI's proposal states that interpreters deployed to the College will hold National Interpreter Certification (NIC) through the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID).

Candidates should also have:

  • Fluency in American Sign Language and English.

  • Ability to interpret in a post‑secondary academic environment.

  • Knowledge of Deaf culture and professional interpreting practices.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.

  • Ability to work with students, faculty, and College staff.

  • Ability to accept assignments based on changing academic schedules.

  • Reliable transportation for on‑site assignments in Toms River, New Jersey.

  • For remote assignments, reliable high‑speed internet, video capability, and an appropriate private work environment.

Preferred Experience
  • Prior ASL interpreting experience in a college or university.

  • Experience interpreting lectures, labs, technical material, or student meetings.

  • Experience providing both in‑person and Video Remote Interpreting (VRI).

  • Experience supporting the same student or course throughout an academic term.

  • Familiarity with disability support services in higher education.

Schedule

This is not a standard 40‑hour‑per‑week position. Work will be assigned based on Ocean County College's need for interpreting services and student schedules.

Assignments may vary by semester and may include daytime, evening, and weekend work. BSI's proposed service structure distinguishes standard weekday assignments from evening and weekend assignments and uses a two‑hour minimum billable period.

About the Assignment

Ocean County College is establishing a pool of providers for American Sign Language interpreting and Communication Access Real‑time Translation (CART) services. BSI's scope covers in‑person ASL, remote ASL/Video Remote Interpreting, on‑site CART, and remote CART services.

Equal Opportunity Employer

BSI provides equal employment opportunities to qualified applicants and employees and complies with applicable federal, state, and local employment requirements.
