Job summary

The City of Carlsbad is seeking a Parks/Trees Supervisor to lead the maintenance and enhancement of parklands, open spaces, and civic facilities. This role requires oversight of grounds, trees, and irrigation, with emphasis on safety, efficiency, and community service.

Ideal candidates will have supervisory experience in parks or landscape operations, strong budgeting and planning skills, and the ability to collaborate across city departments to deliver high quality public spaces for residents

Qualifications

• Knowledge of modern methods, practices, materials, equipment and tools used in planting, cultivating, fertilizing, and trimming landscapes.
• Understanding of pests and diseases affecting grass, ground cover, shrubs and trees and their control methods.
• Irrigation system installation, programming, troubleshooting and repair.
• Basic construction and repair methods including carpentry, pipe fitting, painting, concrete and masonry.
• Familiarity with applicable state and local codes related to landscape work.
• Awareness of safety practices and risk management in maintenance operations.
• Ability to manage organization, budget and personnel effectively.

Responsibilities

• Plan, organize and supervise maintenance of landscaped areas including mowing, trimming, weeding and plant health.
• Supervise irrigation systems, recreation facilities, athletic fields and other landscape features.
• Train, evaluate and prioritize work for staff; monitor workflow and methods.
• Oversee time, material and equipment records; prepare estimates and budgets.
• Coordinate purchases, supplies and inventory; assist with bid specifications.
• Ensure safety practices and conduct site inspections before, during and after work.
• Prepare reports and communicate with other departments and agencies.
• Perform related duties as assigned.
