Job summary

The City of Shelby seeks a skilled supervisor to plan, coordinate, and oversee the maintenance and repair of parks, recreation facilities, equipment, buildings, grounds, and the cemetery. You will supervise staff, coordinate safety and budgets, and manage contracts.

Ideal candidates hold an associate or bachelor’s degree with extensive supervisory experience in parks and grounds, turf and golf course maintenance, and landscaping.

Qualifications

• Associates degree or Bachelors degree with supervisory experience in parks/grounds.
• Extensive knowledge of turf, ballfield, golf course maintenance, and landscaping.
• Ability to plan, supervise, and evaluate staff; manage budgets and contracts.
• Pool Operator certification within six months; Playground Safety Inspector within one year; valid NC CDL.

Responsibilities

• Supervises work crews in repair/maintenance of parks, facilities, cemetery, and grounds; ensures safety standards.
• Oversees inspection of departmental equipment, vehicles, and buildings.
• Participates in long-range planning for facilities maintenance and preventive work.
• Recruits, trains, directs, and evaluates staff; handles coaching and disciplinary actions.
• Develops manuals; participates in budget development and equipment procurement.
• Manages contracts for construction projects; ensures compliance with OSHA/EPA rules.
• Ensures quality control and problem-solving for tools and equipment.
• Coordinates with Director and managers on repairs; communicates plans and progress.
• Instructs staff on procedures and safety; prepares reports and maintains records.
