Job summary

Foothills is seeking a Park Maintenance I/II in the Regional Parks department to perform groundskeeping, turf care, irrigation setup and related tasks at Schaefer Athletic Complex and Easton Regional Park.

The role requires work on Sundays through Thursdays from April 1 to October 1, and Monday through Friday the rest of the year, with on‑call rotations. Candidates should be physically capable and possess basic computer skills.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
  • Graduation from high school or completion of GED.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one within thirty (30) days of employment.
  • Knowledge of landscaping, turf maintenance, and irrigation; certification for agrochemicals may be required.
  • Ability to operate power and landscape maintenance equipment.
  • Proficiency with Word/Excel/Outlook.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain site/turf by aerating, slashing and top dressing; flowerbeds and vegetation in park sites.
  • Mow, edge, rake, weed, prune trees and shrubs; plant lawns, trees, and flowers.
  • Diagnose disease and pest conditions; apply low-toxicity herbicides and pesticides; manage rodent control.
  • Prepare and maintain athletic fields and drag/repair fields for games; maintain surrounding landscapes.
  • Inspect and maintain irrigation systems, valves and backflow devices.
  • Train and supervise seasonal and part-time staff; perform general grounds cleaning.
  • Operate and maintain grounds equipment; keep records of work performed.

Position: Park Maintenance I/II – Regional Parks (Full-Time, Non-Exempt)

Job Description

Park Maintenance I/II is responsible for performing maintenance duties at assigned District parks and other grounds. This includes irrigation, turf renovation, trails, construction projects, playgrounds, ball-field maintenance, and set up and removal of field operation in the District park sites. The job may require shifts ranging from morning to evening hours, weekends and holidays.

This position is for the Regional Parks department and includes work at Schaefer Athletic Complex and Easton Regional Park. This position is required to work Sunday through Thursday from April 1 to October 1 (Monday through Friday, October 1 to March 31) and to also be on call one week at a time every six weeks throughout the year.

Job Duties:

  • Maintain site/turf by aerating, slashing and applying top dressing; maintain flowerbeds and vegetation in park sites and other District sites.
  • Perform a variety of general groundskeeping duties including mowing and edging, raking, weeding, trimming trees, fertilizing, transplanting trees and shrubs and pruning hedges and shrubs; planting lawns, trees, shrubs, hedges and flowers.
  • Diagnose disease and pest conditions; spray landscaped areas with low-toxic herbicides, pesticides, fungicides and insecticides; prepare mixtures in proper proportions; locate, trap and bait rodents.
  • Prepare and maintain ball fields, athletic fields and surrounding landscape areas; prepare fields for athletic competition; drag, repair, prepare and maintain athletic fields; fill infield holes; screen the field; sweep dugouts and clean bleacher areas.
  • Mark with appropriate marking materials or equipment to delineate the area of play and restricting lines as prescribed and established by league and sport rules; grade and water infields and build mounds according to specifications.
  • Prepare, maintain, and install signs and playground equipment as required
  • Inspect, repair and replace automatic and manual sprinkler valves, irrigation lines and sprinkler heads; inspect functioning of controllers and repair as necessary; inspect and repair backflow prevention devices.
  • Train and provide work direction to assigned seasonal and part-time personnel.
  • Collect trash and perform general grounds cleaning (restroom, picnic shelters, tennis/volleyball courts, etc.).
  • Operate riding and push mowers, edgers, weed eaters, blower, rakes, brooms, shovels, hose, chain saws, and other grounds maintenance tools and equipment.
  • Clean and perform routine maintenance on grounds maintenance equipment and tools
  • Install, operate, maintain and repair sprinkler/drainage systems as assigned.
  • Maintain records of work performed including preventive maintenance and needed repairs (field reports).
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings, trainings, and orientations
  • Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within the area of assignment; resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Correct or inform supervisor of any hazards; communicate issues/complaints to supervisor as needed.
  • Assist other departments with District events as needed
  • Attend work on a regular, reliable and punctual basis.
  • Basic computer skills including being able to send/receive email, print documents and utilize Word/Excel documents

Work Environment: 95% or more of the work is performed outdoors in all types of weather conditions and requires the ability to drive to park and building locations. May be exposed to extreme cold, heat, wet, snow, humid or icy conditions. Frequent exposure to noise, fumes, dusts, mists, gases, grasses, molds, fertilizers, solvents, oils, and greases. While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts.

Physical Requirements: Must be able to frequently sit, stand, walk, climb, bend, kneel, stoop, reach, lift and exhibit manual dexterity with the ability to handle objects. Must be able to occasionally push, pull or balance. Upper body strength is a requisite to lift /move a maximum of 80 pounds unassisted and lift /move a maximum of 160 pounds with assistance. Vision requirements include near acuity, far acuity, and depth perception and color vision. The position requires the sense of smell and feeling. Requires the ability to communicate

Required Skills & Experience:

  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age

  • Requires extensive knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment involved in the development and maintenance of landscaped areas and turf and sports turf practices. Requires knowledge of the chemical and cultural controls for disease, including certification for and the proper usage of agrochemicals, fertilizers, and other soil additives. Requires knowledge of the operation of irrigation systems.
  • Ability to operate a variety of power, hand tools, and landscape maintenance heavy equipment such as, mowers, backhoes, aerators, etc
  • Use of modern office equipment and procedures (computer, copier, fax, phone, tablet, smart phone, etc.) Proficiency with applicable computer software applications (Word, Excel, Outlook)

Park Maintenance I

Hiring Salary Range: $42,992 - $50,578

Full Salary Range: $42,992 - $58,165

  • One (1) year labor experience in park or landscape maintenance, horticulture, forestry or a closely related field, or any equivalent combination of education and experience required.

Park Maintenance II

Hiring Salary Range: $48,612 - $59,283

Full Salary Range: $48,612 - $69,954

  • Four (4) years labor experience in park or landscape maintenance, horticulture, forestry or a closely related field, or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Two (2) years experience operating commercial landscape equipment.
  • One (1) year experience as a crew leader preferred.
  • Possession of current certification or within 6 months in one of the following upon hire:
    • C.D.L. Class A
    • Landscape Irrigation Auditor
    • Cross Connection Control
    • Playground Inspector
    • ISA Certified Arborist
