Job Summary

We are seeking an Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic (EMT-P) to fulfill a range of patient care, operational, and compliance responsibilities. This role involves working with colleagues, handling medical emergencies, and supporting the broader emergency services team while operating in fast-paced environments.

Responsibilities

• Complies with all applicable rules and regulations of the West Virginia Racing Commission and the West Virginia Department of Health & Human Services.
• Complies with Security/EMS Department Standard Operating Procedures.
• Complies with Exposure Control Policies for blood-borne and air-borne pathogens.
• Conducts patient care equipment inspections and ensures proper stocking at the beginning of each shift.
• Cleans and/or decontaminates durable patient care equipment.
• Clean and/or decontaminates the ambulances as needed.
• Restocks expendable supplies and disposable equipment utilized for patient care immediately after the incident.
• Performs assessments, interventions, and treatment of trauma and medical patients in accordance with current West Virginia Advanced Life Support, Basic Life Support Protocols, and Scope of Practice.
• Operates telephone and radio communications equipment effectively to transmit patient information.
• Provides verbal reports of patient interactions and conditions to incoming EMS units, receiving facilities, doctors, and nurses.
• Provides written documentation of patient care assessments, conditions, interventions, and outcomes on weekly reports prior to leaving the hospital.
• Provides written documentation of exposures to blood or body fluids in accordance with the Exposure Control policy.
• Assists EMS Department staff when requested within the EMT-P scope of practice.
• Works with other licensed EMS agencies as needed for operations or Mass Casualty Incident situations.
• Enthusiastically supports, actively promotes and demonstrates superior customer service in accordance with department and company standards and programs.
• Participates in meetings and training as required.
• Maintains complete patient confidentiality and company information at all times.
• Utilizes effective communication tools to ensure consistent, accurate and timely information during shifts.
• Ensures that behavior and appearance are compliant with established standards.
• Maintains a professional work environment with management and staff.
• Performs all job duties in a safe and responsible manner.
• Performs other duties as assigned by department and/or company management.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent; 1 year released independent practice.
• Excellent written and oral communication; ability to read, analyze, and interpret documents and to write reports and business correspondence.
• Mathematical skills; ability to accurately calculate figures and amounts and perform mathematical functions applicable to business needs.
• Reasoning ability; ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions, and follow instructions in various formats.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access) and office machine operation.
• Must be at least 21 years of age and knowledgeable in the Incident Command System.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license for the state of residence; must operate a company vehicle and maintain driver records.
• Flexible to work all shifts, including holidays, nights, weekends, and overtime as business needs dictate.

• CPR at the Healthcare Provider level
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) or Pediatric Education for Prehospital Professionals (PEPP) at the advanced provider level
• International Trauma Life Support (ITLS) at the advanced provider level
• West Virginia certification in Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC)
• West Virginia MCI I & II
• Hazardous Materials Awareness

Physical Demands

• Maintain physical stamina and proper mental attitude in a fast-paced environment to deal effectively with customers, management, and employees.
• Vision of 20/20 or correctable to 20/20; ability to see standard visual warning signals, distinguish fine print, observe signs of wounds, and assess EKG tracings.
• Hearing sufficient to interpret medical history, standard audible warning signals, radio and telephone communications, and stethoscope auscultation.
• Speak, read, and write in English for patient communication.
• Lift objects: up to 50 lb alone; up to 150 lb with one partner; up to >150 lb with 3–4 partners.
• Stand, sit, or kneel for periods of 10 minutes or longer.

Work Environment

Work is performed in and around large crowds, outdoor environments (including inclement weather), and within venues where smoking is permitted and noise levels are high. Exposure to loud noises, airborne particles, and thoroughbred horses is expected.
