Job summary

Torrington Public Schools in Torrington, CT, is seeking a Special Education Paraeducator for the Voices program at Torrington Middle School (grades 7–8). Under the direction of a certified teacher, you will work with students with disabilities in small groups or individually, reinforcing instruction.

You will assist in maintaining materials, equipment, and records of students and perform additional tasks as directed to meet each child’s IEP.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree and/or 60 college credits or successful passing of the Para-Pro Exam.
  • Warm and supportive personality with the ability to relate to children with a variety of special needs and disabilities.
  • Ability to maintain the rules of confidentiality and the rights of all children.

Responsibilities

Special Education Paraeducator for the Voices programfor assignment located at Torrington Middle School (grades 7-8)

Job Summary and Functions:

Under the direction of a certified teacher, works with students with disabilities in small groups or individually, reinforcing instruction as directed by the teacher.

Assists in the maintenance of materials, equipment, and records of students and any additional tasks as deemed necessary by the special education teacher or supervisor in order to meet the needs of each child according to their IEP.

Qualifications:
  • Associate Degree and/or 60 college credits or successful passing of the Para-Pro Exam.
  • Previous experience working in a school setting or with groups of children preferred.
  • Warm and supportive personality with the ability to relate to children with a variety of special needs and disabilities
  • Ability to maintain the rules of confidentiality and the rights of all children.

Internal Applicants: Regular employees of the Torrington Public Schools who are current members of the Paraeducators' union. In accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement, "Paraeducators shall not be eligible to apply for lateral positions that become vacant after August 15th. Notwithstanding the preceding sentence, paraeducators shall be eligible to apply for promotional opportunities at any time."

This position is posted September 8, 2026 - September 15, 2026, but will remain open until filled

(All new hires shall be placed on the Hire Rate (Step 1) at the time of hire. Notwithstanding, the parties recognize that there may be situations in which prior experience working with children in an educational setting adds value to the District. In such cases, the Superintendent or designee shall have the discretion to place the new hire on Step 2 of the salary schedule.)
