Job summary

UNC Health's Student Nurse Externship Program: Postpartum Unit offers rising senior ADN/BSN students hands-on clinical experience in a 50-bed postpartum setting at UNC REX Women’s Center.

During ten weeks, externs work with experienced RNs, observe specialties, and gain skills in patient care, family education, and safety. The program runs May 24–July 31, 2027, with a paid summer schedule and required NC nursing assistant and BLS licenses.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED; current enrollment in a prelicensure nursing program.
• Nursing Assistant I listed with NC DHHS and BLS certification.

Responsibilities

• Observes, collects, and documents patient information; reports significant changes to RN.
• Measures vital signs, height/weight, specimen collection, simple wound care.
• Provides direct personal care for activities of daily living.
• Assists with maintenance of unit readiness and supplies; supports patient and family education.
