Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required; higher-level degree may satisfy this requirement.
• Current enrollment in an accredited prelicensure nursing program with anticipated graduation within 12 months time from the start of student nurse externship.

Responsibilities

• Observes, collects, and documents patient information; reports significant changes to RN or provider.
• Assists patients and families during admission, orientation, and discharge.
• Provides care/treatments per plan of care including vital signs, specimen collection, wound care, and other routine tasks.
• Provides direct personal care for activities of daily living per plan of care (bathing, dressing, feeding, ambulation).
• Provides indirect care: cleaning, restocking, transporting, and routine clerical tasks.
• Reinforces patient teaching and documents understanding of instructions.
• Assists providers with routine exams and procedures and procurement of equipment during emergencies.
• In psychiatry, aids in reality orientation, therapy, de-escalation, and therapeutic milieu monitoring.
