Job summary

Greenheck Group in Wisconsin is seeking a motivated Packaging Engineer Co-op for Jan–Aug 2027 to design and validate packaging solutions for crates, skids, and foam components, balancing protection, cost, and sustainability.

You will work with Manufacturing, Product Engineering, Logistics, and suppliers to develop drawings, prototypes, and testing plans (ISTA/ASTM) and apply AI tools to improve analysis and workflows while gaining hands-on experience.

Qualifications

• Enrollment in a related bachelor’s degree program (Packaging Eng, Mechanical Eng, Supply Chain, Materials Science or similar).
• On track to graduate in the next 3 semesters.
• Interest in hands-on learning and a fast-paced environment.
• Strong problem-solving, analytical, and critical-thinking skills.
• Experience with basic hand tools and physical prototypes.
• Proficiency in Excel and data work.
• Experience with 3D modeling software is a plus.
• ISTA/ASTM packaging materials testing coursework or experience is a plus.
• Experience using AI tools in coursework or projects is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Support the design and development of packaging solutions, including crates, skids, corrugated materials, and foam components, considering protection, manufacturability, material usage, and transport efficiency.
• Create and update packaging drawings, specifications, and documentation.
• Build, coordinate, and evaluate prototypes and packaging testing with suppliers, including ISTA/ASTM testing.
• Research packaging materials, industry trends, and emerging solutions to improve cost, performance, and sustainability.
• Analyze freight damage and claims data to identify recurring issues and improvements.
• Help standardize packaging designs across product lines to reduce material usage.
• Identify opportunities to improve packaging cost, sustainability, pack-out time, and manufacturability.
• Support production teams by troubleshooting packaging issues and recommending design improvements.
• Explore returnable and reusable packaging solutions through cost, logistics, and feasibility analysis.
• Use approved AI and automation tools to improve packaging analysis, documentation, design workflows, and decision-making.
• Collaborate with Manufacturing, Product Engineering, Logistics, Quality, Purchasing, and external suppliers to support packaging projects and communicate results.

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING

WHAT YOU SHOULD HAVE

• Enrollment in a related bachelor’s degree program (Packaging Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Supply Chain, Materials Science or similar degree with technical aptitude).
• On track to graduate in the next 3 semesters.
• Interest in hands-on learning and a willingness to learn in a fast-paced environment.
• Strong problem-solving, analytical, and critical-thinking skills.
• Experience with basic hand tools and comfort working with physical prototypes.
• Proficiency in Excel and working with data.
• Experience with 3D modeling software is a plus.
• Coursework or experience with packaging materials, design, or testing methods such as ISTA or ASTM is a plus.
• Experience using AI tools in coursework or projects is a plus.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

Greenheck Group takes pride in providing competitive pay. The starting base pay range for this position is $22.00/hour - $28.00/hour and is based on position and academic year.

In addition to competitive pay, co-ops receive paid time off for company-observed holidays and are eligible for additional financial support through a housing allowance or sign-on bonus.
