Job Description

The Packager ensures that parts are prepared, packaged, and labeled according to detailed specifications for shipment to customers or storage in the stockroom. This role requires close attention to part quality, adherence to required ship dates, accurate numbering and documentation, and strict compliance with safety and handling instructions. The position also includes masking and unmasking parts in preparation for paint and powder coat processes, and operating heat-treatment ovens when required.

Responsibilities
  • Package parts for shipment or storage in accordance with customer specifications and internal work instructions.

  • Wrap parts securely to prevent damage during handling, transport, or storage.

  • Mark and label containers, tags, and parts using appropriate marking tools and stamping machines.

  • Number parts accurately prior to packaging and ensure correct identification for shipping and stockroom processes.

  • Follow detailed directions and work instructions for handling parts throughout the packaging operation.

  • Complete all required paperwork, including time records, sequence numbers, and other documentation related to packaging and shipping.

  • Monitor the quality of parts being packaged and shipped, ensuring they meet established quality levels.

  • Review route sheets for special instructions related to packaging, including customer specifications and protective measures to ensure product arrives safely and without damage.

  • Submit Job Improvement/Suggestion Forms or Pack Information Sheets to capture packaging-related insights and ensure important information is added to route sheets for future orders.

  • Understand and follow all safety rules and procedures while performing packaging and masking tasks.

  • Support organizational initiatives and follow direction from area leadership to meet production and quality goals.

  • Perform masking of parts using a controlled, consistent method to ensure proper adhesion and preparation for paint and powder coat processes.

  • Operate ovens to perform heat treatment on parts when required by the process or work instructions.

  • Perform unmasking by removing masking compounds from parts after paint and powder coat processes are completed.

  • Maintain a clean and organized work area, contributing to a safe and efficient production environment.

  • Use computer systems as needed for work orders, documentation, and production tracking.

Work Environment

The role is based in a precision metal fabrication facility that maintains a very clean, safe, and well-organized shop environment. All facilities, including office and production areas, are air conditioned, providing a comfortable workspace throughout the year. The setting is non-union and production-focused, with established processes for packaging, masking, and metal fabrication operations. Work is performed on defined shifts: 1st shift typically runs from 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., 2nd shift from 3:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m., 3rd shift from 10:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. Employees use tools such as marking instruments, stamping machines, ovens for heat treatment, and computer systems for work orders and documentation. The environment emphasizes safety, cleanliness, and adherence to structured work instructions and route sheets.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of CEDAR RAPIDS, IA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $16.00 - $18.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
