Purpose And Scope

The professional registered nurse Outpatient RN CAP 1 is an entry level designation into the Clinical Advancement Program (CAP). This position is accountable for providing and coordinating clinically competent care, including assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation for an assigned group of patients. It may include delegation of appropriate tasks to direct patient care staff such as RNs, LVN/LPNs, and Patient Care Technicians. As part of the End Stage Kidney Disease (ESKD) healthcare team, this role involves decision-making, teaching, leadership, and quality improvement activities to enhance patient outcomes and facility operations.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform all essential functions under supervision and guidance from the Clinical Educator, Preceptor, or collaborating RNs.
  • Systematically collect and analyze patient data pre-, during-, and post-hemodialysis; document findings; adjust treatment plans; notify team members as needed.
  • Assess and document patient/family learning needs; provide education accordingly.
  • Coordinate and deliver safe, effective hemodialysis therapy with the care team.
  • Administer medications as prescribed, documenting medical justification and effectiveness.
  • Initiate or assist with emergency response measures.
  • Serve as a resource, participate in staff training, and mentor new staff.
  • Ensure proper laboratory procedures, rescheduling missed collections.
  • Update nursing assessments and care plans collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team.
  • Provide information on transplant and treatment options to patients.
  • Complete CAP requirements for advancement.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
  • Involves heavy lifting, patient mobility assistance, and prolonged standing.
  • May require moving equipment and lifting up to 30 lbs.
  • Work environment typical of healthcare facilities, with exposure to infectious materials.
  • Includes desk work, computer interaction, and travel to training sites or other facilities.
Supervision

Oversight of staff as a Team Leader or Nurse in Charge, following successful completion of required training and with at least 9 months RN experience, including 3 months in hemodialysis.

Education and Licensure
  • Graduate of an accredited Nursing school.
  • Current state nursing license.
  • CPR/BLS certification.
  • Meet state practice requirements.
Experience and Skills
  • Entry-level for RNs with less than 1 year nephrology experience in the last two years.
  • Minimum 9 months RN experience preferred.
  • Chronic/acute hemodialysis experience preferred.

Hourly rate: $29.29 - $48.82. Benefits include medical, dental, vision, 401(k), paid time off, and parental leave. Dialysis training provided.
